Health Benefits of Teas

We carry quite a large assortment of Gourmet Teas ~ Black Tea, Red Tea, Green Tea, White Tea & Whole Fruit Tea.

The health benefits of these teas are amazing and the variety of uses in astounding.  We have a profile on every tea we carry, the region where the tea is grown, details of how it is picked and treated before it becomes available to the public.  This information also includes brewing instructions for both hot and cold.

Black Teas are available in many different flavours and some are available Decaffienated. Black tea contains a number of antioxidants, which are compounds that help the body fight free radicals (chemical by-products known to damage DNA). These antioxidants include quercetin, a substance said to combat inflammation and support healthy immune function.

In a laboratory study published in 2009, scientists discovered that compounds extracted from black tea were more effective at slowing the absorption of blood sugar than those extracted from green tea and oolong tea. Additionally, a 2009 population study of 1,040 elderly adults found that long-term intake of black and/or green tea was associated with lower prevalence of diabetes.

Red Teas are Decaffienated and extremely healthy and available in a wonderful variety of flavours.

Like green and black tea, red tea (Rooibos) has been found to be rich in anti-oxidants and flavonoids. In fact, Rooibos tea has been found to have as much as 50 times more SOD than Green Tea. It also has other anti-oxidants not found in other teas.  The effect of free radicals (a by-product of normal cell function) in the process of aging and declining of the immune system is limited by the anti-oxidants in Rooibos tea.  Rooibos tea is completely pure and natural, as it contains no additives, preservatives or colorants. It is a soothing drink for people on a calorie-restricted diet

Rooibos tea is also strongly recommended for people suffering from irritability, headaches, disturbed sleeping patterns, insomnia, nervous tension, mild depression or hypertension. Rooibos tea contains no caffeine and therefore has a soothing effect on the central nervous system. Rooibos tea is also low in tannin and therefore does not have a negative effect on the absorption of iron and proteins into the body.

Rooibos tea has anti-spasmodic properties, thus relieving stomach cramps and colic in infants. Rooibos tea also relieves stomach and indigestive problems like nausea, vomiting, heartburn, stomach ulcers and constipation.

Furthermore, rooibos tea also supplements the daily amounts of calcium, manganese and especially fluoride, needed for the development of strong teeth and bones. It contains zinc and alpha-hydroxy acid, which promotes healthy skin and magnesium which is necessary for a healthy nervous system.

Rooibos tea has a soothing effect on the skin, relieving itching and certain skin irritations like eczema, nappy rash and acne when directly applied to the affected area.

This tea is also available in an Espresso version, making a delightful latte as well as other specialty drinks.  The Espresso version of this tea is off the charts  in health benefits (go to click on the "Health" tab at the top for all of the details.)

White Tea is also very healthful, in fact it's being considered to be incorporated into cosmetics and hair products.  It has a very mild taste and can be added to other teas for a more flavourful cup of tea.  White Tea Benefits have been creating a buzz of late as many tea observers have claimed that it possesses more health benefits than the better-known green tea, the only other type of tea that does not undergo oxidation and fermentation.

It is fast-dried while green tea is roasted in a pan. The fast-drying process traps a great deal of in the leaves of the white tea, thereby potentially making white tea the “supreme” health drink.  White tea may help prevent heart ailments, white tea can fight stroke by reducing the accumulation of cholesterol in the bloodstream, white tea can lower blood pressure and improve the function of the arteries, white tea may help fight cancer by attacking the free radicals that inflict damage in the cellular level, white tea promotes strong bones, white tea promotes healthy teeth and gums, white tea contains high amounts of anti-bacterial and anti-viral agents thereby promoting general well being, white tea helps in protecting the skin from damage and may even reverse some of the damage wrought by free radicals, white tea may reduce blood sugar and help alleviate the symptoms of diabetes,

Green Tea lowers cholesterol and increases energy expenditure. Green tea also causes carbohydrates to be released slowly, preventing sharp increases in blood-insulin levels. This promotes the burning of fat. The thermogenic effect was originally attributed to its caffeine content. However, green tea stimulates brown fat thermogenesis far greater than a comparable amount of pure caffeine. It appears that the catechin-polyphenols, in particular epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), and caffeine that naturally occur in green tea work synergistically to stimulate thermogenesis and augment and prolong sympathetic stimulation of thermogenesis. It has been shown to increase 24-hour energy expenditure and fat oxidation (caffeine only increases metabolism during the time you take it).

Weight is gained as excess sugars and fats are stored in the body as fat cells. Green tea catechins can help prevent obesity by inhibiting the movement of glucose in fat cells. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) has been found to be especially effective. There is now good evidence that green tea catechins are related to reductions in body fat.

EGCG is a powerful antioxidant with positive qualities but a balanced diet and exercise, lots of it, are of paramount importance to any weight reduction program.

Matcha Tea is also a green tea.  We've devoted an entire article on the amazing tea which has it's own link.

Fruit Tea ~ A healthy alternative to sugared sodas, soft drinks and artificially flavored tea-type drinks. Our herb & fruit teas taste better than all the above, (in our humble opinion), have no sugar, (it's a bona fide fact), and are really good for you, (they're packed with Vitamin C - who can argue?), Oh, and there's one more thing. These are absolutely fantabulous when brewed to make iced tea.
